Regular use of sunscreen is an effective method to safeguard and maintain healthy skin. Sunscreen application can help to prevent sunburn, reduce the likelihood of skin cancer, and minimize signs of early aging.

Do we need to apply sunscreen daily?

It is important to know when to use sunscreen

Every day, the sun emits UV rays that can harm skin health. Even on cloudy days, 80% of the sun's UV rays can penetrate the clouds and reach the skin.

Just 15 minutes outdoors is enough to cause long-term skin damage and cancer potential from sun exposure. This is why dermatologists recommend using sunscreen every day, especially on uncovered skin when doing activities in direct sunlight.

Tips for Choosing the Best Sunscreen

When choosing a sunscreen, you need to consider the following points:

SPF Level

It is highly recommended to use sunscreen every day to protect the skin from the sun's damaging rays. Choosing a sunscreen product with the right SPF depends on how long you will be in the sun and how strong the sun exposure is in your area.

If you will be spending time outdoors for a short period of time, then SPF 30 can be a good choice. However, if you will be spending time outdoors for a long time or live in an area with high sun exposure, then it is advisable to use a product with SPF 50 or above.

Sunscreen spectrum

Sunlight contains two types of harmful rays: UVA rays and UVB rays. Overexposure to both radiation might result in skin cancer.

UVA rays can age the skin prematurely. They cause signs of premature aging such as wrinkles and spots on the skin. These rays can even penetrate window glass.

On the other hand, UVB rays are the leading cause of sunburn.

Most sunscreens only have protection against UVB rays. UVA rays also contribute to skin cancer and premature aging. To provide maximum protection to the skin choose a sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection. This means you should choose a sunscreen labeled with UVA and UVB ray protection.

Water Resistant

A good sunscreen is labeled as water resistant, meaning it can protect against water for some time. Due to the risk of sweat or swimming activities, you should reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours. Sunscreen usually rubs off when you towel dry yourself so you need to apply more.

Moisturizer or Sunscreen First?

You might be wondering which comes first, sunscreen or moisturizer? Keep in mind that as long as the sunscreen you're using is SPF 30, broad spectrum, and water-resistant, it doesn't matter which order you apply it in.

If you work indoors but close to a window, you must reapply sunscreen every few hours.
